Materials

  • Caron Simply Soft [100% acrylic; 385yds/352m per 7oz/198g skein]; color: Violet
    9738, 3 skeins
    NB: If your arm circumference is less than 14.5" and your sleeve length is less than 20", you may only need 2 skeins.
  • US 6/4mm 24" circular needle (or size needed to obtain gauge).
  • US 4/3.5mm 24" circular needle (or 2-3 sizes smaller than needle to obtain gauge)
  • US 4/3.5mm 16" circular needle (or 2-3 sizes smaller than needle to obtain gauge)
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge

20 sts and 26 rows per 4"/10cm in stockinette on largest needle.

Pattern Notes

Read all directions before beginning. There are places where you will be expected to complete two directions at once.

The shrug is knit from the right cuff to the left cuff in one piece. When it is time to work the front and back shaping, the front will be on the right edge of the piece when facing the right side of the work.

Work even until sleeve matches right ending with 8 rows garter, 6 rows stockinette, and 8 more rows garter.

Bind off.

Finishing:

Sleeves
Seam the sleeves.

Collar
With the needle used to work the body, pick up stitches around the neckline, picking up one stitch for each stitch on the shoulders, and 3 stitches for every 4 rows on the front and back neckline. Knit in rounds for 1.5". Purl one round.

On the next round, decrease the total number of stitches by 10% and continue in rounds until 1.5" past the purl round. BO. Whip stitch the bind off edge to the inside of the collar.

Lower Edge
Pick up stitches around lower body edge of piece with the longest smaller needle. Pick the stitches in the ratio described in the collar. Knit in 1x1 rib for 1.5". BO.

Shoulders
Using shortest circular needle or DPNs, pick up stitches around the shoulder holes in the ratio described in the collar finishing. Knit in 1x1 rib for 3 rounds. Bind off.
